Inventory continued to grow at a large Fox Valley manufacturing facility, making spare parts and MRO materials increasingly difficult to manage. Materials were stored in multiple locations, duplicate products accumulated, and inventory records lacked consistency, making it harder for maintenance teams to quickly locate critical parts. Recognizing the impact on efficiency and reliability, the facility partnered with Werner to create a more organized and sustainable storeroom operation.
To address these challenges, Werner worked closely with the facility's storeroom manager and leadership team to evaluate existing processes and develop a customized optimization plan. Together, they identified opportunities to improve inventory accuracy, increase visibility, and create a more efficient workflow without disrupting daily operations.
Werner began by reviewing the facility's SAP records to verify inventory information and identify opportunities for improvement. From there, products were labeled, cataloged, and relocated into standardized storage locations while new cabinetry and pallet shelving were installed to improve accessibility and organization.
To minimize disruption, work was completed in phases, with Werner's team focusing on specific product categories each week. A dedicated onsite team member coordinated activities, answered questions, and ensured the project remained aligned with operational needs.
Together, the customer and Werner developed a customized plan to improve inventory visibility, organization, and long-term storeroom management.
The project improved inventory visibility and accuracy across the facility through the relocation and organization of 8,970 spare parts. It reduced the time spent searching for materials, helped identify duplicate and obsolete inventory, and created better control over MRO spending. With a more structured storeroom in place, the team now benefits from improved workflows and greater confidence in inventory data.
The project's success relied on close collaboration between Werner and the facility team. By combining the customer's knowledge of day-to-day operations with Werner's inventory management expertise, both teams worked together to create a solution that aligned with operational goals while supporting ongoing maintenance activities.
Today, maintenance and storeroom teams have greater visibility into inventory and faster access to critical spare parts. What was once a difficult-to-manage storeroom is now an organized, scalable system that supports maintenance efficiency, inventory accuracy, and operational reliability.
"This project was successful because it was truly a team effort. By combining the customer's knowledge of their operation with Werner's inventory management expertise, we created a solution that not only improved the storeroom today but also supports their long-term operational goals.ā
